For the 2025 Johann Strauss anniversary, WienTourismus sent The Blue Danube Waltz into space. Working with ESA, Stargate Group Werbeagentur and Jung von Matt DONAU staged a live concert by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the MAK and transmitted it toward Voyager 1.
The starting point was a surprising historical fact: The Blue Danube Waltz – firmly anchored as the “anthem of space” – was missing from the Voyager Golden Records of 1977.
The public took part too. All 13,743 notes of the waltz were claimed online by people from 92 countries, each sending their name into space with the music.
